New Public High School to be Built at Dundas & Neyagawa

The school board anticipates the high school would not open until September 2021

new public high school north oakvilleThe Town of Oakville Planning and Development Council voted Monday to authorize Town staff to enter into negotiations with the Halton District School Board (HDSB) with regard to the disposition of approximately 2.4 hectares of the Town’s North Park lands for the project. According to the plan, 3.8 hectares of land owned by the nearby Serbian Church would also need to be purchased for the proposed high school. The school would front onto Dundas Street West with the Sixteen Mile Sports Complex to its east and Trafalgar Lawn Cemetery to its west.

The Town’s Manager of Current Planning Charles McConnell, in a report to council, stated “Based on the existing and anticipated growth within north Oakville, the Halton District School Board has identified the need to construct a public secondary school in the location of Dundas Street and Neyagawa Boulevard in accordance with the North Oakville East Secondary Plan. The school board has identified a need to acquire a total of approximately 6.2 hectares of land in order to construct the public high school, associated outdoor playing fields and required parking.”

Town staff said the proposed site is strategically located next to the Town’s North Park, so as to allow for the potential of a school/park campus at North Park, which would feature community activities benefiting both the student population and the general public.

Town staff said that in order for the school board to develop the new high school on that site it would need to: • Upgrade the existing driveway into the Sixteen Mile Sports Complex off Neyagawa Boulevard to a dedicated public road • Design, construct and finance their proportionate share of a new roadway from Dundas Street along the easterly limit of the subject lands to accommodate a future public road with limited access to Dundas Street • Apply for and obtain zoning approval for the school site, including the necessary updates to the environmental and functional servicing study reports • Apply for and obtain the necessary regional access/servicing permits. A report on the Town’s negotiations with the school board and the board’s finalized preferred high school design option will come before the Town’s Planning and Development Council at a later date.

With the rapid grown of The Preserve area, located north of Dundas Street between Neyagawa Blvd and Sixth Line, there’s is an increasingly urgent need for a Catholic elementary school in the area. Currently, students living in The Preserve are being bussed to St. Mary’s Catholic Elementary School in Bronte Creek. Santa in Bronte Creek a Huge Success

The 3rd annual 'Santa in the Park' event was held on Saturday November 28 in Bronte Creek and once again the event brought the neighbourhood together.

Santa, along with Mrs. Claus, arrived to the park on Colonel William Pkwy between Liptay Ave and Stocksbridge Ave and together brought the Christmas spirit in abundance. Kids from all over Bronte Creek arrived to meet St. Nick and have a chat. Afterwards, they got their picture taken with the big guy and were sent on their way with a candy cane.

Parents mingled while enjoying complimentary coffee, hot chocolate and timbits. They also did a great job supporting Easter Seals' Kids to Camp program, with the event pulling in more than $500 for this fantastic charity.

We here at Jamie Vieira & Associates would like to thank everyone who came out and supported Santa in the Park. This is what community is all about, and it takes participation from everyone to make a neighbourhood great.

Thanks for making Bronte Creek great!

Burlington Set to Approve Development of World Class Waterfront Over Next 20-25 Years

Burlington Waterfront Park Development

The City of Burlington is inching closer to approving a plan to develop the waterfront area at the foot of Brant Street where Spencer Smith Park currently lies into a world class park for residents and visitors alike. The plan involves 6 six unique areas including Spencer Smith Park, The Living Shoreline, The Strand, The Wind Beach, The Commons and The Skyway. A reconfiguration of the current lakefront will allow for one continuous public park. The plan has been in development for almost 10 years and is projected to cost more than $51 million.

The 6 Areas of the Proposed Park Are:

Spencer Smith Park

The current role the park has will be maintained which allows the area to hold festivals such as The Sound of Music and Ribfest. The well-known park is the foundation of Downtown Burlington and includes the Brant Street Pier, a childrens play area, and ungraded promenade, new lighting, and more.

The Living Shoreline

Right beside Spencer Smith Park, this area will include an Aboriginal gas fire circle overlooking the water, non-motorized boat access, and a First Nations Interpretation Area directly across the street from Joseph Brant Museum. A new shoreline boardwalk is also planned.

The Strand

The Strand is a traditional beach area which will have children's play and water-theme play areas, changerooms, bicycle repair stations, bottle fill stations, and non-motorized boat access.

The Wind Beach

Envisioned to be a natural and educational area by planners, The Wind Beach wil have beach access as well as a Dune boardwalk and natural wooded protected trails.

The Commons

To be used for small-scale cultural and festival events. Along Lakeshore Road will have a very inviting landscape drawing people to the volleyball courts, lawn bowling facilities, a pond for remote control boating in the summer and skating in the winter. They're also planning a patio over the water.

The Skyway and Federal Pier

Envisioned as the anchor point of the new development, it will include and active lift bridge, observation areas for Great Lakes ships entering the Burlington Canal, and a direct cycling connection to Hamilton as well as upgrades to the federal pier.

An additional 368 parking spaces in another part of the plan which will add to the 1,800 already there.

New Development at Trafalgar & Dundas Offers Affordable Luxury

Oakvillage-Trafalgar-and-Dundas-Development

The new neighbourhood being developed on the northeast corner of Trafalgar Road and Dundas will offer many of the simple luxuries common in more expensive homes according to the developers Minto Communities and Branthaven Homes.

SIZE: 1,190 TO 2,175 sq/ft
PRICE: Low $400,000's to over $700,000
DEVELOPERS: Minto Communities, Branthaven Homes and Emshih Developments (Commercial)

Hundreds of freehold and condominium townhomes are to be built starting in the low $400,000's, giving people who until now may not have been able to afford a home in Oakville a chance to live in this great community. In addition to affordability, there are many features making these homes extremely popular amongst buyers including (depending on model) garages with inside access, rooftop terraces on about half of the Minto floor plans, floating vanities, marble counters, and oak strip floors.

The first phase release of homes saw over 90% of the 450 residences sold this spring, and developers are expecting the next phase to sell at a similar rate. Amanda Wilson Watkins, vice-president of marketing and sales for Minto said, "We had inclination it was going to be very popular, but to be able to almost completely sell out on the opening weekend, we weren’t expecting that,” says Ms. Wilson Watkins. “More than likely, we will sell out before we actually have a grand opening to the public.”

Occupancy is set to begin September 2016.

Saw Whet Golf Course Land's Fate To Be Decided October 2015

merton lands development oakville saw whet golf course

The fate of Merton Lands, located north of the QEW between Third Line and Bronte Road, will be decided at an Ontario Municipal Board hearing scheduled for October 2015. Both Infrastructure Ontario and Bronte Green Corporation had applied to the Town of Oakville to develop the land, with the Province withdrawing it’s proposal last fall. Bronte Green Corporation however is still interested in developing a 55-hectare plot of land at 1401 Bronte Road.

The Town is currently conducting a study of the lands to determine land use designations. Council approved the Town-led study in 2012 and it’s set to be completed before the October meeting. Residents hope that the land will be re-zoned as part of our Natural Heritage System and also link them into the Greenbelt, which would prevent any development of the area.

There was a meeting February 3 when the Ontario Municipal Board held a pre-hearing conference at Town Hall to discuss the application from Bronte Green Corporation. It was at this meeting where the October 2015 hearing was scheduled.

Bronte Green Corporation’s application to build about 780 houses and two multi-storey buildings on what is currently Saw-Whet golf course was predictably met with public outcry. Oakville has already met its growth obligations until 2031 that were set by the Province.

You can attend a public meeting on the Saw-Whet development on April 14 at 7:00pm at the Region of Halton Headquarters, 1151 Bronte Road and learn how you can become involved.

Park Improvements in West Oakville Excite Residents

The Town of Oakville has announced multiple improvements to parks in the Bronte and Lakeshore Woods areas. Donovan Bailey Park, Bronte Athletic Park, Nautical Park and the Queen Elizabeth Park Community and Cultural Centre will undergo a number of changes designed to improve the use of these spaces. They're all part of Oakville's plan to improve the overall quality of life of its' residents.

Bronte Athletic Park

Bronte Athletic Park, located just east of East Street on the north side of Lakeshore Road, will see enhanced parking facilities complete with a loop to create a safer solution to the current dead-end lot. New pathways will ensure pedestrians don't have to share the driveway with vehicles.

Baseball players and fans alike will also benefit from the improvements, with enclosed players' benches, improved backstop height, and baseline fencing to minimize foul balls being hit to Lakeshore Road.

Fitness Centre to Open in Queen Elizabeth Park Community and Cultural Centre

There's great news for residents near the Third Line and Bridge area, with the Town of Oakville announcing that a new fitness centre is opening in September 2014. The facility will be one of four in Oakville.

The "flexible and hassle-free" membership the Town is offering has an array of advantages including access to Glen Abbey Rec Centre, Iroquois Ridge Rec Centre, and River Oaks Community Centre. The pass offers unlimited access to strength and cardio equipment, recreational swims at all pools, recreational skating at all areas, a fitness appraisal by a certified personal trainer, access to all squash and raquetball courts, and unlimited passes to 75+ fitness classes weekly. Visit Oakville.ca for more information.

Donovan Bailey Park

Improvements to this park just north of Bronte Athletic Park will see new rest areas along the trail, tree plantings to add to its character, and a newly installed pedestrian activated signal that will allow an easier way for people on foot to cross to the northern part of the trail. Finally, a new parking lot footprint will allow greenspace to be added to the area as well.

Nautical Park & Shell Park

Nautical Park, located in Lakeshore Woods, will see some new sports facilities installed including a basketball court in the fall, an outdoor hockey rink for winter 2015, and tennis courts built in Shell Park. The tennis courts will be on the east side of Great Lakes Blvd beside the current dog park. These are subject to 2015 capital budget funding.

These are exciting times for the residents of West Oakville. Kids and adults alike will have brand new facilities to use daily, creating an even greater sense of community in this great town.
